Mascots Race for Hope

On a sunny Saturday in Sherwood Park, The Schmidt Investment Group and Expand Hope hosted mascots from professional sports teams, businesses, municipalities, schools and not-for-profit organizations in the first ever Mascots Race for Hope. Cheered on by the crowds that had come for the chance to support their mascots, it was an entertaining and eventful race to the finish. Ultimately Izzy the Eagle from Kings University in Edmonton took the top spot on the podium, while Griff from Grant MacEwan was hot on Izzy’s heels, finishing in a close second and Titan from Fort Christian High School coming in third place. Other honourable mentions were Lionel from Boston Pizza, Bee from Lafarge Canada and the ever engaging Hunter and Punter respectively from the Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos.

Families, organizations, sports teams and individual racers from across Edmonton, Sherwood Park and the surrounding areas also showed their support on race day by taking part in either the 5km walk/run or 10km run. With family activities, food trucks, and music, there was something for everyone at this fun-filled, family-friendly event.

Through the 2018 Mascots Race for Hope, The Schmidt Investment Group and Expand Hope accomplished the goal to build a school in the community of Chacalte, one of the most marginalized communities in Guatemala. School construction will begin in January 2019, with the school opening in spring of 2019.

Before and after pictures of the first Expand Hope School in La Pista.

We are thrilled to see the first Expand Hope school built. This three classroom school was constructed just 9 km outside of Nebaj, the main municipality in the Quiche region. This school will change the lives of approximately 150 children per year. Enrolment numbers for the start of the 2018 school year have already shown that students who have dropped out have returned to school as a result of the new classrooms.

#2 School

Before and after pictures of the second Expand Hope School in La Pista.

Our second school is located close to our first school in the community of La Pista, Guatemala. This was a restoration project of a four classroom middle school for grades 7-9. This completed the middle school campus along with teachers’ offices and several latrines. The completion of the school campus has impacted the lives of over a hundred children who are now enrolled in school.

Chacalte school build project discussion

Our third project is a middle school in Chacalte. The community of Chacalte has a unique story of survival from the Guatemalan civil war, and is the beneficiary of our 2018 Mascots Race for Hope community event. There is one primary school in the community which is currently oversubscribed and is unable to accommodate all children. The new school will be complete for students to enroll in spring of 2019.

#4 School

Community: Antigua Xonca, Guatemala

Community Leaders share their vision for the new school build

The fourth Expand Hope School is being built in Antigua Xonca which is also located in the Nebaj region. There is no middle school in Antigua Xonca and 80% of the students in the community do not study past grade 6 because they do not have a middle school. The new Expand Hope school will open in spring of 2019. The Schmidt Investment Group Team is excited to be making all of this possible and are thrilled to be a part of this transformation.
